Who is a candidate for ILIT, and who is not

Uncontrolled asthma, pregnancy and some medications rule it out. The screening an allergist does before saying yes.

Key points

  • Confirmed allergy, symptoms not controlled, a wish for a short course: the usual candidate.
  • Uncontrolled asthma, pregnancy, beta blockers and some cardiac conditions rule it out.
  • The decision is made at the consultation, not online.

ILIT is for people with an allergy that testing confirms, whose symptoms are not controlled by avoidance and medication, and who want a short course rather than years of injections. That describes a lot of people. It does not describe everyone.

Ruled out

  • Uncontrolled or severe asthma, until it is controlled.
  • Pregnancy, or planning one during the course.
  • Beta blockers, which blunt the treatment of a reaction; some other medications too.
  • Certain cardiac conditions.
  • Children under the practice's minimum age, usually twelve.

Worth a conversation

Multiple allergens: ILIT vials can hold several, but the allergist decides how many make sense in one course. Previous reactions to allergy shots: some practitioners see ILIT as a reasonable alternative, others wait. Food allergy: not what ILIT is for, whatever a website says.

Only an allergist who has examined you can say. This article describes the usual screening; the decision is made in the consultation.
